The name "jackfruit," or kathal in Hindi, comes from the Sanskrit word kantakaphala, meaning "thorn fruit." Despite its name, there’s nothing thorny about the versatile jackfruit, which is loved by food enthusiasts across India in both its ripe and unripe forms, used in curries, desserts, and stir-fries.
